Larry J. Ickes

Larry Joseph Ickes, 69, of Custar, Ohio passed away Friday, September 22, 2017 at Bethesda North Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio. He was born May 9, 1948 in Bowling Green, Ohio to the late Stanley and Dortha (Thielen) Ickes. Almost 50 years ago, on May 18, 1968 he married his childhood sweetheart and the love of his life, Judy (Wilhelm) Ickes at St. Louis Catholic Church, Custar, Ohio. Larry was a 1966 graduate of McComb High School and was a sharpshooter in the Ohio Army National Guard. Farming was his passion and he spent a lifetime on his family farm. He was a gifted craftsman, building things in his woodshop to share or sell. Together with his wife, they sold their creations as Wood-N-Stuff at various craft shows and festivals. He was a lifetime member of St. Louis Catholic Church, Custar. Larry loved to collect guns, ride his motorcycle, and travel. His favorite places were Las Vegas and the family trips to Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Michigan where they enjoyed the dune-buggies he built. Larry had a larger than life laugh and you knew it when you heard it. He loved his family fiercely and spent his lifetime caring and providing for them. The grandchildren were his reward and his legacy. Larry lived life to the fullest and loved to make others laugh. He was never happier than when his family was gathered around the kitchen table or swimming pool. So many will remember his generosity and constant willingness to help whoever needed it. He touched the lives of so many. He is survived by his loving wife, Judy; his cherished daughters, Amy (Dave) Warren; Sherry (Mike) Butera; Brandy (Daryl) McLeese; Erika (Jason) Dahms; Katie (Justin) Burris; his adoring grandchildren: Hannah, Hailey, Alyssa; Nicholas, Madelyn, Lauren; Addison, Alexys, twins on the way; twins, Emma and Jacob, Sophie; Maya, Jack, Faith. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Lester Ickes and sister, Yvonne Phillips. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at St. Louis Catholic Church, Custar with Fr. Dave Tscherne officiating. Graveside services will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Rodenberger Funeral Home, Deshler.
