Saneholtz P. Edwin

Edwin Paul Saneholtz, 85, died August 20th. Born November 21, 1925, he was married for 60 years to the former Janet Franz, who preceded him in death in March. A lifelong resident of Napoleon, he left school two weeks before his high school graduation in May 1944, to report for basic training in the Army Air Corps. Although trained as a tail gunner, World War II ended before he could be assigned overseas. When he was released from Service, he returned to Ohio and attended Bowling Green State University. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration in 1950. Ed went to work for the family business of J.H. Saneholtz and Sons/Saneholtz Monuments. The business name was changed in 1960 to Saneholtz Supply Co. and Saneholtz Monuments. Known for his ability to carve monuments, Ed enjoyed bringing granite to life. Saneholtz Supply Co. was turned over to his son, Edwin A. Saneholtz in 1991. Ed continued to carve monuments until 1997, when he sold Saneholtz Monuments and retired. Ed was always ready to tell a joke and they were either groaners or bawdy. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed watching hunting shows. For 40 years Ed and Janet had season tickets to Napoleon High School Football and Basketball games. They had season tickets to BGSU football for 30 years. In 1995 he was honored by the City of Napoleon for serving on the Board of Public Affairs and for over 25 years of service to the community. Ed was a life member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, the Napoleon American Legion, North American Fishing Club, and the National Rifle Association. He spent several years as a member of the Moose Lodge, Napoleon Elks Lodge, Ohio Readi-MIx Concrete Association, and the Maumee Valley Sportsmen Club. After retiring, he spent his summers fishing in Lake Erie on his boat, the JAN-ED, and winters joining the local coyote hunts. Ed taught his grandkids how to fish, the art of spitting watermelon seeds, and how to make a fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Ed is survived by his two children: Patricia (General Matthew) Matia, Burke, VA; and Edwin A. Saneholtz, Napoleon; sister Marilyn Rausch, Napoleon; and four grandchildren: Courtney Matia, Seattle; Margaret (Boban) Rankovic, Miami Beach; Zachary Saneholtz, Perrysburg; and Ross Saneholtz, Napoleon. Preceding him in death were his parents: Arthur E. and Helen (Bittikofer) Saneholtz; wife, Janet (Franz); sister Betty Jean Saneholtz; daughter-in-law Teri (Wiles) Saneholtz; and brother-in-law, Lowell "Pete" Rausch. Viewing will be from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Friday August 26 at Rodenberger's Funeral Home in Napoleon. The private burial will be held August 27th with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Maumee Valley Sportsmen Club or the LIVESTRONG Foundation.
