Loren Maassel

Loren C. Maassel, 73, of Freedom Township, Ohio passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Monday, November 07, 2016 at Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center. He was born on April 17, 1943 to the late Carl and Hildegard (Rosebrock) Maassel. He was baptized in May, 1943 and later confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Freedom Township. He married Joyce Kessler , his school sweetheart, on June 20, 1964, at the church by Pastor George Maassel of whom he was also baptized and confirmed. Loren attended St. John Lutheran School in Freedom, then attended and later graduated from Liberty Center High School. He was a 22 year employee of C.F. Gerken and Sons Construction, Napoleon, as a heavy equipment operator and later Miller Brothers Construction Co. of Archbold, for another 20 years, retiring in 2004. He was a 50 year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Loren was also a farmer, farming in partnership with his brother Don Maassel, , D&L Farms. Loren was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church, Freedom Twp., having served as deacon, president of the congregation and two terms as an elder. He served as St. John's PTL President and chairman of the Board of Education and President of the Booster Club for the school. Loren was also 4-H advisor for the Freedom Royal Farmers for 10 years. Loren loved spending time with their grandchildren, loving, attending, and supporting them in all their endeavors. He is lovingly survived by his wife; Joyce of Napoleon, sons; Dean (Jennifer) Maassel of Napoleon, Mike (Tana) Maassel of Paulding, and Krista Maasel, of Lithopolis, grandchildren; Eric, Skyler, and Leah Maassel, Alicia and David Maassel, Logan Gerken, Cole (Rachel) Gerken, Hunter Gerken, and Kaelyn Gerken, brothers; Marlin (Carolyn) of Defiance, Don (Karen) Maassel, Elmer (Pat) Maassel) and sister; Susan (Rick) Thayer all of Napoleon, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. on Sunday, November 13, 2016, at St. John Lutheran Church, Freedom Township. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 12, from 2-8 PM at Rodenberger Funeral Home in Napoleon, and at the church on Sunday from 1-2 PM. Suggested memorials are to St. John Lutheran Church, Freedom Twp. Memorial Fund, Defiance Inpatient Hospice, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
