John William Sickmiller

John William Sickmiller, 78, of Napoleon, Ohio, died on July 6, 2026 at the Vancrest of Holgate. John was born January 24, 1948, in Napoleon, Ohio, the son of Eryl and Florence (Mann) Sickmiller. On Feb 13, 1971, John married Nancy Ann Schilperoot, who died in 2001. On June 28, 2003, he married Roberta Ann Wagner, who survives. John was in the United States Army and served in Vietnam, where he was wounded in combat and earned a Purple Heart. He also earned two Bronze Star medals, the Army Commendation Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge for heroism in the face of combat. After returning home, he attended Defiance College and earned a Bachelor of Science in Natural Systems as a member of the Alpha Chi National Honor Society. He worked at General Motors for 30 years, retiring in 2006. After retiring, he delivered Meals-on-Wheels for the Henry County Senior Center. He was an active member, singer on the praise team, and Sunday School teacher at the Napoleon Church of the Nazarene. John grew up on a farm in Oakwood, Ohio, with many brothers and sisters. As a child, John enjoyed playing outside and playing Chinese checkers. During his high school years, he enjoyed basketball, baseball, and driving his cars. As a parent, he enjoyed camping with his family, listening to music, playing cards and games, puzzles, and reading. John enjoyed gardening, ice cream, taking walks, and playing putt-putt. As a grandparent, he coached Upward basketball and watched his grandchildren excel in academics, sports, music, and arts. He is survived by daughter, Angela (Mark) Armbruster of Napoleon; son, Mark (Jennifer) of Petoskey, MI; son, Adam (Danielle) of Cincinnati; sister, Judy (Dennis) Baker of Oakwood; two brothers, Joseph Sickmiller of Oakwood and Jerry Sickmiller of Lima; half-sister Melinda Moczulski; step-brother, DeWayne (Sharon) Evans of Napoleon; brother-in-law Lee Baker of Canton, MI; step-children Kristine (Craig) Hendricks of Defiance, Tara McCullouch, of Millersberg, Ben Hoffman (Ali Timm) of Defiance, Shaun Hoffman of Defiance; 6 grandchildren: Ben and Luke Armbruster, Grace (Danny) Baroudi, Ryan Sickmiller, Ari and Roman Sickmiller; 13 step-grandchildren: Michael and Maddie Hendricks, Ian (Rebecca), Isabel, Alexander, and Rhett McCulloch, Liam (Tori) Cowle, Ryan ”Dale” Brown Jr., Alexis, Hannah, Christian, Makenzie, Derrick, Zoey, and Presley Hoffman. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; step-mother, Marjorie; sister, Jeanette; step-sisters, Garnett Noble, Marjane Baker, Janette Coplin, and Winona Hays; step-brother Donald Evans; brothers-in-law Herb Noble, Stan Coplin, and Dick Hays; grandson Samuel David Sickmiller. Visitation will be held at Napoleon Church of the Nazarene on Thursday, July 9, 2026, from 3 to 8 p.m., and again on Friday, July 10, from 10 to 11 a.m. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the church, Pastor Chris Baker (John’s nephew) officiating, with burial to follow at Glenwood Cemetery in Napoleon, where military honors will be accorded by Napoleon American Legion, Post 300.
