Catharine Laurella Johnson

Catharine Laurella Johnson passed away July 19, 2017, at Alpine Village's assisted living facility in Napoleon, Ohio, with her family by her side. She celebrated her 100th birthday with 150 close friends and family on March 29. Born in the McClure home of her parents, Guy and Lena (Schlotz) Shaffer, she was predeceased by her parents, brother Robert Shaffer, son-in-law Derry Middleton and her husband Ivan (Bud) Johnson with whom she was married 52 years before his death in 1989. Her children Ruth (Chuck) Labie (Napoleon), Janice Middleton (Wyandotte, MI), Nancy (Chuck) Haton (Palm Bay, FL), Carol (Rex) Mason (Waterville), Phil (Linda) Johnson (Napoleon) and their families were her greatest delight. She was blessed with seven grandchildren, Tim (Julie) Labie, Shelby (Mike) Rasey, Sheila Labie, Cara (Mark) Hurliman, Greg (Amy) Middleton, Janell (Jeff) Miller, and Jeff (Emily) Mason; great-grandchildren Ashley, Zachary, Cameron, Brandon, Madison, Brady, Luke, Maya, Layne, Nora, Blake; and great-great-grandchildren Wrenly and Archie; step granddaughter, Nell (Ed) Micich; step great grandchildren, Phoebe and Skylar. Her brother, James (Marilyn) Shaffer (Harrod, OH) survives also. She passed on to her family her love of God, of country living, gardening, church organist, church involvement, card playing and music. When her children were in school, she supported the band mothers and PTA and was a 4-H advisor. She loved traveling and riding through the countryside. She graduated from McClure H.S. in 1936, was a homemaker, raised chickens and sold eggs, worked seasonal at Campbell's Soup Company and was an employee of Weasel Radishes in McClure. The memories of her past 100 years have been passed on through the many journals she has kept and during her daily sitting on the porch at Alpine Village. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Alpine Village who treated Catharine and her family like family for the last nine years. They will be a special part of our memories. Visitation will be Saturday, July 22 at 2-8 p.m. at Rodenberger Funeral Home, McClure and at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the church.
